Probably the best Wayne Root article I've read. If the government can't
run a brothel profitably, there's no hope for GM....very good point and
funny too.

Mike,
I agree that Root makes mostly good points here, but I'm not sure he's saying anything that hasn't already been said abundantly elsewhere. The story about the government not being able to profitably run Mustang Ranch has been around for years and has been used by libertarians on numerous occasions to illustrate the incompetence of government. And of course the former Mustang Ranch owner who fled tax evasion charges is not a "fugitive from justice," but a fugitive from *injustice*. Also, it's not "impossible to lose money" in the world's oldest profession as Root states. He should know better than to think any business proposition is 100% guaranteed of success. This article -- http://www.lahontanvalleynews.com/article/20060407/News/104070032 -- contains a reference to a brothel that closed when the owner went bankrupt. Finally, while big, gas-guzzling cars may be more profitable for GM to build today (thanks in part to government rules that artificially incentivize U.S. automakers to build SUVs and pickup trucks), it seems pretty clear that relying on them is not a sound long-term strategy.

OK...but I still think it was a good article and funny. There's really
nothing new under the sun so the fact that the same info had been
suggested elsewhere before doesn't bother me.
