An article about the extensive road closures for the firemen's funeral
today

includes this comment:
Again, I am saddened by the behavior of my neighbors. Two people died
while attempting to protect our city. And what do we do? We shutdown
some roads for a mere 8.5 hours, and we honor them with a mere two
hundred fire trucks -- on city time. The city should shut down all
streets for at least five days, have a 1000 fire truck procession on
Friday, THEN on Saturday, honor the dead by actually showing up to pay
your respects on your own time.
Yeah, this could be a really bad PR stunt for SFFD once the freeway actually
shuts down during rush hour. I don't think they understand or care how ugly
traffic is going to be.
And then everyone will see 200 fire trucks guzzling down the freeway. I
thought they only closed it for presidential visits? Doesn't this start a
bad precedent?
As Kevin Carson says, "With enemies like this, who needs friends?" The
city government is doing our work for us, making themselves out to be
vain idiots. Perhaps a risky strategy to rely on generally, but people,
as you note, do get worked up about traffic delays, even if they don't
care much about Libya or Afghanistan.
