I'm in NYC this week. A news story I keep hearing about is the
following: People are buying cigarettes tax-free in upstate Indian
casinos and then reselling them in NYC, earning an arbitrage profit.
The state government is all up in arms about this and wants to force a
tax upon the Indians. Their rationale? These sales of tax-free
cigarettes are "funding terrorism". Hahahahahaha
As always, government will think of any reason to tax, and
like "protecting the environment" or "terrorism", new laws are used as
a bludgeon far beyond the purpose sold to the public upon their
enactment.
