Rob,
The consensus at one point did appear to be that the matter would be
taken up by a committee, so according to the precedent established by
approving the minutes of the October meeting as recorded, Marcy is
correct and the matter is now in committee, even if objections were
expressed. Of course in reality I think it was a terrible precedent,
and should not be followed. I agree with your recollection that the
matter was ultimately tabled.
I also feel that censoring our email lists is a solution worse than
the problem it purports to solve.
Yours in liberty,

Hash: SHA1Actually, because there appeared to be an unreasonable amount of
debate even on the composition of the committee, we never actually
did refer it to committee. The motion to make Bryce the chair of the
committee was on the floor, but there were objections to the list of
committee members, so the whole thing was tabled before we could
officially form the committee. As we learned from the October
meeting, unless there's a clear official vote of the membership, not
everyone will accept the "decision" as valid.Chris, can you validate or refute my memory of the events?
Rob

1. Sorry about your disappointing experience at the Metreon.
2. My minute notes say that the DAF discussion was "Referred to
Committee",
not "Tabled." And that a "Committee on the DAF" materialized on the
spot,
with Bryce as its Chair. I would imagine that Bryce would now have
to refer
the matter back to the membership, so that your proposal can proceed.3. Your proposal is excellent. I do hope that Chris Maden will give
it
about 5 minutes on the Agenda, and the membership will make a quick
decision
at the meeting. I really did not find the enormous amount of time
spent at
the last meeting on this topic productive.Marcy

Subject: [lpsf-activists] Event Announcements Policy (Was: Matrix:
Revolutions - Meet today (Sun.) at Metreon IMAX, 450pm)

Hash: SHA1(If you're free Wednesday night to try Matrix IMAX again, see the
p.s. below.)Please excuse me while I groan, but...
I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER.
No offense to Starchild, Terry, or anyone else on the list, but WE
HAVE TO STOP DOING THIS!I just got back from standing around outside the Metreon from 4:15
until 4:35, with nobody showing up. By the time I went inside, the
show was, of course, sold out. Thankfully, I'd sort of seen this
coming and didn't go buy myself a ticket (or worse yet 3 tickets)
earlier in the day, as I'd offered to do this morning. When I saw
Terry's email an hour before the proposed meeting time, I knew the
outing was doomed. It just makes the LPSF look bad when we use our postal mailings,
announcements email list, and, yes, even discussion email list (the
people on the activists list should be used to it by now), to
advertise poorly planned gatherings of any type. This is why I reiterate the need for an internal policy that we only
advertise to the outside world via LPSF's name those events that are
well-planned and for which the who, what, when, where, and why are
all clearly defined well in advance of the proposed gathering.Since the discussion on this topic at Saturday's meeting was tabled
indefinitely (I don't recall the motion saying that it be brought up
at the next meeting), I want to propose my own fair solution to this
problem, which doesn't single out Direct Action Forum, but keeps us
from embarrassing ourselves like this in the future. My motion at
the next meeting will be (atrocious grammar aside, which I'm sure
Mike Acree will help me fix ;-D ):"I move that the new LPSF policy regarding event announcements be:
1) that only those events for which location, date, time, and topic
are already determined at the time of publication be mentioned in
postal mailings, and2) that only those events for which location, date, time, and topic
are determined and publicized at least two weeks in advance be
mentioned in email announcements, whether to lpsf-announce OR
lpsf-discuss, while3) events or gatherings with less than two weeks' notice be limited
to publicity via the lpsf-activists email list."Now, to deflect the criticism about monthly meeting agendas going
out less than a week in advance, let me say that's another issue we
definitely need to address, but that issue is not affected by the
above motion. This is because the location, time, and topic are
well known far more than 2 weeks out before any monthly meeting.
Though
the official agenda tends to be put out at the last minute, at least
30 minutes of the business meeting is identical each and every month
(welcome to new members, officer reports, committee reports, and old
business -- which anyone who attended the previous meeting should
remember wasn't completed). Furthermore, the bylaws requirement
that a meeting be held every month and that those meetings be
publicized
to the membership trumps my little procedural motion, anyway.I welcome further discussion on the lpsf-activists list of my
planned motion at the December meeting, and I'm willing to tweak it
if
anything important is brought to my attention.Rob
P.S. Since I expect this motion to pass, I recommend that we weekly
chat people do one of two things -- either come up with a list of
default topics for the next several weeks, or start using only the
activists list to organize chats. And, since we've not yet set a
chat date, location, or topic for this week (I proposed Baghdad Cafe
for Monday, but I didn't see any positive responses), I suggest we
try the Matrix IMAX at Metreon thing again this Wednesday night at
8:20. If others are interested, I'll go buy the tickets in advance,
since I live near the Metreon. So we can get decent seats, let's
meet in the bookstore in Metreon between Starbucks and Just Desserts
at 7:15.- -----Original Message-----

drive to Vallejo to pick up my son at 4:30, so it's unlikely I'll be
able to make it over to SF in time. Enjoy the show and let us all
know what you think about it. As Starchild has pointed out, there
are many Libertarian/Anarchist/Freedom issues at work in this
trilogy and it should make for a lively discussion.Terry Floyd

Hash: SHA1Kai and I had planned on going next weekend to see it (he's got job
commitments this weekend), but it looks like IMAX is ending on
Thursday, so I'll go see it with you guys on the big screen then see
it again on a small screen with Kai next weekend.I think it's the same price as normal screens, actually. And I did
see that it's on Fandango, which is a couple extra bucks for
guaranteed seats. But since I only live a block from Metreon I can
go pick up a few tickets myself at regular price around noon and let
you guys reimburse me if you're worried about it selling out.Shall I buy two extra tickets? Will it just be the three of us?
Rob
P.S. It would be best to meet no later than 4:15. I can go in and
hold 3 seats for us while you guys do the propaganda thing, but
decent seats fill up fast in that theater, so it's best for one of
us to go in 30 minutes in advance.- - -----Original Message-----

Sounds good. Worth paying a few extra bucks to see it on the IMAX
screen. What say we meet outside the main entrance to the Metreon
between 415pm and 430pm? I'll try to get there before that to buy my
ticket and then go outside and pass out Libertarian propaganda. 8)
Anybody else want to join us, feel free to show up.<<< Starchild >>>
The Imax screen at the Metreon has a showing at 4:50, 8:20 and 11:50
p.m., but apparently there are no matinee prices for that screen.
They are also showing the film on a standard screen at 4:00, 5:40,
7:30, 9:10, 11:00 and 12:40, but again, no matinee pricing. I
assume that weekend screenings are always full price at that
theater. If
anyone is interested in joining me, I will try to get to the 4:50
showing.Tickets for the Metreon cannot be purchased online through Yahoo,
but I doubt the film is selling out with all the screens it is
playing
on, so I won't worry about that.Terry Floyd

Very libertarian message -- anarchist, even. The second installment,
while not abandoning that message, was a huge disappointment in many

installment
with trepidation. But I'm too curious to stay away.Yours in liberty,
