In the US, yes. But look for fat poor people in the urban areas of Somalia, Congo, East Timor - places where the poor actually don't get enough to eat - and you'll get a different result.

Or for that matter, look around in Havana for a really interesting result - the poor are neither fat nor hungry as welfare comes in the form of a monthly sack of rice, beans and salt. If the US cared about the health of it's own poor, it might consider doing the same instead of providing food stamps used to by junk food.
