Often, when we think about the future, we imagine the tools we will use, but
rarely the impact those will have on social structures. Shirky doesn't
attempt to predict the future, but he makes the case that a third way of
civic engagement is emerging, distinct from what has been historically
corporate and government-driven. I think the fact that Shirky can summon so
many compelling examples even at this early stage, speaks to the
significance of what he's writing about.
