This link did not bring me to a candidate list.

Works for me. You'll probably need to make sure the return character is removed when you copy and paste it into your browser.

It took me to sfgate. However, there was no
list on the page, and no link to a list that I noticed.

What is "the return character?"

It's the character that separates lines. Notice this link is 2 lines?:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/08/09/
state2235EDT0186.DTL

that's because our mail applications insert a return character after 80 characters, which happens to be right after the "09/". Try pasting this:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/news/archive/2003/08/09/

into your browser, and then appending this:

state2235EDT0186.DTL

making sure there is no space or return between the two.
