Brochures

Starchild, I know you're a big fan of "leafleting" the crowd. But we've
seen year after year that when we do that, 90% of them end up on the
ground or in the trash within ten feet of the booth. So, if we're going
to do something to give out to the crowd, let's make it small and cheap,
yet eye-catching enough that people won't just immediately throw it away.

I really liked the rainbow "Vote your values" postcard that Bruce
Guthrie did last year:

http://outrightlibertarians.blogspot.com/2006/08/you-gotta-smack-em-in-forehead-with-it.html

I've emailed LPStuff.org to find out how much they'd charge for
something similar. I'd be willing to contribute $100 to getting
something like that printed. Anyone else?

Rob,

You have a point, but you're also definitely exaggerating -- most of
the fliers we give out aren't discarded within ten feet of the booth.
And the ISIL brochures are only five cents a piece. As outreach
materials go, that's not a particularly high cost. Yes we could get
something cheaper, and we should have other such materials for other
reasons, but I don't think putting five cent fliers out there knowing
many of them will go unread or be discarded is an unacceptable waste.
If even one person in ten reads an in-depth brochure, it's arguably
worth the surplus in order to expose them to a detailed pro-liberty
message. Probably many more people would read them if they were
written in comic format like those little Christian tracts or
something though.

Bruce Guthrie's thing could be good for Pride, if we have "vote your
values" on one side and the Libertarian Party along with a few choice
issue positions on the other. But I'm not just thinking about these
brochures for Pride, but for distribution throughout the year at all
kinds of different venues and events.

The way I came up with the numbers is that I counted
what we had of each brochure and subtracted that from
50 to get the number we needed to order. I seem to
remember Marcy saying that when she took care of this,
she had 50 of each brochure for Gay Pride.

I'm not so sure that it's worth ordering 500 of your
favorite brochures. ISIL does update its brochures
from time to time and it would be too bad to be stuck
with a lot of older brochures. 500 brochures is a lot.

I do agree that for Gay Pride we should have a larger
quantity of Mike's brochure, say 250.

Phil, could you get a vote of the Executive Committee
on what you want to do and let me know so I can order.

Phil & Francoise,

IIRC, the item came up, but we never voted on it.
I'm in favor. I am
curious though, Francoise, how you came up with the
varying amounts
of the different pamphlets -- the list seemed to
have a lot of odd
numbers, like 29 of one pamphlet, 34 of another,
etc. The truth is
thirty copies of anything isn't going to go that far
anyway. I
suggest that we fill your order, or some round
number of each
pamphlet, say 30, but also pick a few of the ones we
like best, say
the top half dozen, and order 500 each of those,
along with 500 of
Mike Acree's pamphlet (or did we already order his?
I know we talked
about it...). That way we can concentrate on handing
those out, and
just keep two or three dozen each of the others on
hand if people
specifically ask about those issues. Taking a quick
review of the
ISIL pamphlets (see
http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/

<http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/> ) my tentative

choices might be:

• Dictatorship at Your Doorstep (
http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/ <http://www.isil.org/resources/
lit/>
dictatorship-at-doorstep.html )
• A History of Jury Nullification (
http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/ <http://www.isil.org/resources/
lit/>
history-jury-null.html )
• Immigration: An Open or Closed Door? (
http://www.isil.org/
resources/lit/immigration-english.html )
• The Hidden War on Your Privacy (
http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/ <http://www.isil.org/resources/
lit/>
hidden-war-priv.html )
• Free Trade or Protectionism? (
http://www.isil.org/resources/lit/ <http://www.isil.org/resources/
lit/>
free-trade-protectionism.html )
• The Causes of Aggression (
ttp://www.isil.org/resources/lit/causes-

<ttp://www.isil.org/resources/lit/causes->

aggression.html )

Unless others have other suggestions, I will
formulate this as a
motion for the Executive Committee to vote on.

Meetin of 5/12/07

Phil:
In the letter re things that needed to get done

at the

May LPSF meeting that I delivered to you before

I

left, I had asked for an allocation of money for
brochures for our booth at Gay Pride week-end (I

had

enclosed the list of brochures needed -and cost-

with

my letter). I notice this wasn't done. It's not

a

problem for me personally. I will be away at

Porcfest

on Gay Pride, but it would be a shame for the

LPSF if

we didn't have a full range of documents on our
positions for people who stop by at the booth. I
don't know how fast ISIL ships, but waiting til

the

next meeting may not be a good idea. If you

think this

is important enough, you might want to consider
getting Executive Committee approval for the
allocation so I can place the order
