Books (was: Fundraising via LPSF website)

Rob,

Regarding the question on books, I think there are really two
different categories. In one category there are the books that best
explain our philosophy. In this group might be included books like Mary
Ruwart's "Healing Our World," "Human Action" by Ludwig Von Mises, or
"Libertarianism In One Lesson" by David Bergland.

Then there is the other category -- books that have been the most
effective at capturing peoples' imagination and bringing them into the
movement, even though they may not be strictly libertarian or may focus
on only certain aspects of the philosophy. This category would
obviously include "Atlas Shrugged" and other works by Ayn Rand, perhaps
books by L. Neil Smith, George Orwell, Robert Heinlein, etc.

Perhaps it would be easier to just call these two categories
"non-fiction" and "fiction," but there could well be works of fiction
that belong in the first category and works of non-fiction that fall
into the second, as well as works that straddle the line between fact
and fiction.

I'm currently about half way through "Unintended Consequences," a
novel about the gun culture in America and how attacks on gun owners
provoke a backlash. Although many novels include real-world people and
events, this one seems to do it much more than most. I've just gotten
to the part where the feds are trying to set up Randy Weaver in the
events leading up to the massacre at Ruby Ridge.

If you don't mind a lot of space spent talking about technical details
of firearms and the joys of hunting and shooting, one-dimensional
characters, and protagonists who can act annoyingly superior (though
not as bad as Rand's characters in these respects), it's a great book!

Yours in liberty,

I have to admit that I've not done much with the development committee
thus
far. The first step I suggest is to become an Amazon.com associate
and put
links to libertarian books on our website. We will earn between 2.5
and 15%
on any book sales referred from our site. Not lots of money, but
enough for a
third pizza at the monthly social. It's also a good way to educate
people
about Libertarianism (one of our LP.org website inquiries today
replied to my
standard email asking what books best explain our philosophy).
Comments,
anyone? Here's the link for more info about the Amazon associate
program:
