And until such time as government can be gotten out of regulating marriage altogether, do you want the marriage laws to continue discriminating against gays? (It's a simple yes or no question.)
If your answer is yes, then you *are* effectively advocating the status quo in the present public policy debate, regardless of what your eventual goal may be.

I agree. The only argument I recall hearing here against marriage rights for same-sex couples is that they will somehow be harmed by being given equal opportunities. But as getting married is a choice, I don't see how this is an issue. There are a small number of states (12) with common law marriage (CA not being among them) but that seems to be a separate issue that should be addressed by the repeal of those laws.
