As a (most likely, white male) libertarian, do you feel smug?

Hello all,

The Week, a weekly news magazine, posted a Nov 6 item, "The smug confidence of libertarians," which reported on an article Nora Caplan-Bricker had written for NewRepublic.com. That article is entitled, "Why are most libertarians white dudes?"

According to Caplan-Bricker, libertarians comprise mostly of smug white men who don't "feel the pain" of women, blacks, hispanics and other minorities, who believe they need a "safety net," not the freedom libertarians advocate, to protect them from the ills and misfortunes of life. (No doubt Caplan-Bricker believes this safety net should be provided by you know who.) The Week then added what seems to be their take: "That’s why rational people agree to a social contract that protects the losers from abject poverty, starvation, and death."

I, as an "other minority" libertarian, don't agree to such a "social contract," though I honestly believe I'm a "rational person," however smug Caplan-Bricker and The Week may believe I am.
