Arnold's Word

He's going to get the flip-flop criticism regardless. Far more
Americans saw him say a year ago that he was in favor of gay marriage on
Jay Leno's show than have heard that he will veto this bill. And, let's
not forget, he's gunning for a constitutional amendment that will let
him run for President. And his checkbook depends on people nationwide
liking him. Bill Clinton was the biggest waffler in the history of
politics, and no politician was more popular.

I sure don't want to discourage this good activity,
but I must say Schwarzenegger has already been
severely criticized by the teachers union and others
(in a big media campaign) for breaking his word on
other matters. And he has unequivocally said he will
veto it. There is a virtue of keeping one's word.
Although I would be ecstatic if AB 849 could be
enacted, we should be aware that he has already said
what he will do and he must surely be sensitive to
past criticism that he can't be trusted to keep
promises.
