Another must-read story from Joe Eskenazi at SF Weekly

How an illegal, wasteful, and environmentally destructive practice MUNI said it would stop 17 years ago continues to this day:

Thanks. Cui bono on this one?

They're only wasting taxpayer dollars! You can't expect bureaucrats to give a damn about our money.

Les

I’m sure they don’t give a damn about our money. But it sounds like a little bit of trouble to go out at 4:00 every morning and turn all the buses on. Somebody has to be benefiting, but it wasn’t obvious to me who it was.

Maybe the guy/gal gets paid overtime or gets paid for 8 hours when he/she worked for 2 hours just to turn on the engines and get them warmed up for the drivers. Never underestimate government employees in figuring out a way to mulct the taxpayers.

Les

Yes, the story does leave that obvious question unanswered, and I don't have the answer either. My best guess is that it might be something like this: MUNI drivers getting off shift leave the buses idling as a favor to those getting on shift, so that those drivers don't have to arrive early enough to turn their buses on and warm them up before heading out, but can just jump in and go.

But that's just a guess; I don't know the details of how their system works. Some people were speculating about it in the comments section. I left a couple comments there myself, as well as in the comments in another SF Weekly story about how MUNI is planning to raise fares and fines again -- http://blogs.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2013/06/muni_monthly_passes_and_parkin.php ). If anyone sees any other stories about those planned MUNI fare/fine increases, I encourage you to mention Joe Eskenazi's story in the comments there too.
