Another Ed Jew Question

Dear Mike and Everyone Else;

The Board of Supervisors was not elected to be the US State Department - all politics is local stay local - end all the foreign policy statements by the board of supervisors. Stick to what SF needs and this is less taxes and less city bureacracy.

Are Republicans like me invited to Ed Jew's event tonight?

Thanks Sarosh…I hear what you are saying. However as Bush's

approval ratings plummet along with the public opinion of the war, I
say the war issue is a good bargaining chip for Ed. It is also hardly
a "fringe" position to take. And it costs him nothing other than the
support of partisan Republicans from which Ed has already formally
distanced himself (he's an "independent"). If Ed wants to use his
influence to support an economic freedom agenda, this is a feel good
maneuver that can be used potentially to advance some issues more
concrete in their application than this one. It wouldn't hurt to
support a motion that only symbolically moves to withdraw US troops
from the quagmire especially if it can contribute to a favorable
outcome for something important to economic freedom.

IMHO

Mike

If anyone on the LP list is speaking with Ed Jew, may I suggest

that

you ask him to support the following Board resolution (which

currently

has only five votes – one short of the number needed to
pass):

070305 [Urging the United States Congress to Secure the Immediate

and

Safe Withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Iraq ]

Sponsored by Supervisors Daly, Ammiano, Dufty, Mirkarimi

Resolution calling upon the United States Congress to exercise its
constitutional authority to revoke the United States ' commitment

of

military forces in Iraq and to secure the immediate, safe and

orderly

withdrawal of all our troops from Iraq .
Even if Ed Jew would support such a resolution, and even if such a

resolution passed the Board of Supervisors, in reality, it is
unlikely to have any real impact on the situation in Iraq . Ed is an
SF Supervisor. Lets stick to SF issues.

Please use your contacts with politicians to build relationships,

explore areas of mutual agreement and interest (ie develop personal
political capital, which is spent sparingly and carefully, AND when
it really matters). Meaningful future cooperation that will have a
real, concrete and positive impact on our daily lives in SF is the
result of first understanding a politician's inclinations and points
of view, eschewing polemics, and then later using painstakingly built
relationships to educate and inform the politician, so they may, in
time, align their views and votes.

Quixotic and symbolic requests may not result in a gain in

credibility for the requester, or for the Libertarian party, and are
counter-productive. If Libertarians want to be other than a fringe
group, we have act accordingly.
