Glad to report our protest against the Urban Shield militarized police exercise and conference got a good turnout today. We occupied the whole street of Broadway in front of the Marriott Hotel. Police seemed to keep their cool as far as I could tell and rerouted traffic. I only heard a little of the speakers and music though, because I decided to go down to the end of the blocked off area for better visibility. I took a couple signs helpfully provided by OGC, the Oscar Grant Committee ("Cop Watching Ain't A Crime" and "Stop Police Terror"), and held them up on the corner of Broadway and 9th Street where all the traffic coming up Broadway was being forced to turn while keeping up a stream of commentary on my megaphone.
A couple other protesters joined me at times, including a young black boy who had a poster with photos on it of various victims of the police including Oscar Grant and many I didn't recognize. We got some very positive reactions from a few drivers and pedestrians, especially African Americans, although one guy yelled "get a job!" and a couple people flipped me off or yelled rude comments. As usual with the public, the majority did not visibly react one way or the other. I'm not sure whether it was part of the exercise, but I saw one distinctly military looking vehicle go through the intersection while I was there. There were also at least two helicopters hovering around overhead, as well as cops standing around, and I made a point of commenting on this stuff on the megaphone ("See those helicopters up there? They are there to intimidate people exercising their First Amendment rights, and your stolen tax dollars are being used to pay for it. Flying helicopters isn't cheap..." etc.). Most of my commentary was focused around the issues of militarized police, police abuses, and the threat of a police state, but I also touched on a number of other issues such as the "War on Drugs", the Non-Aggression Principle, and the scapegoating of immigrants.
Riding back to the city on BART, I met a guy who works for the Prison Law Project and had wanted to be at the protest but wasn't able to make it. He said his group has successfully sued and gotten the number of prisoners that the state of California is allowed to export to other states capped at 10,000. I believe he said there are something like 170,000 prisoners in the state. The Prison Law Project is fighting for better conditions as far as the overcrowding, access to medical care, etc.
Perhaps others will be able to report on more of what went on at the main protest, how many people marched from the Park Boulevard park, etc. At a very rough guess, it looked like several hundred people at the main protest, maybe 1,000. The speaker or two I heard sounded very angry and fired up. I understand the anger, which is totally justified, but I think it's good to be aware of how it might come across to an ordinary passer-by catching just a general flavor -- not to sound like you're just ranting at and berating your audience. One woman I heard was clearly making an effort to connect with the public, describing how she used to be politically apathetic, working in a cushy job, etc., and how her eyes were opened.

Anyway, the event is over, but Urban Shield still goes on for a couple more days. So what else can be done? One thing that can be done on an ongoing basis is bringing pressure to bear on the event's sponsors.

Please call or write as many as you can, starting at the place in the list where the sponsors/vendors whose names begin with the same letter as your own name appear (so those appearing at the beginning of the list won't get the lion's share of the contacts).
Here are a few ideas of things to say; I'm sure you can think of others:
• There was a big protest Friday with hundreds of people demonstrating against Urban Shield -- it is very controversial
• People don't want police militarization or events that support it like Urban Shield happening in our community
• Please side with the people, not the government -- don't support the law enforcement agencies that are violating people's rights
• Providing the tools used by government to violate people's rights makes you culpable to some degree for how those tools are used, both personally on a moral level, and legally as a company
• Be an ethical, socially responsible business and don't sell to law enforcement
• We don't want to see more police excesses of the type that led to riots in Ferguson
• Making a few extra bucks isn't worth the price of your children and grandchildren growing up in a full-on police state
• You (the person answering the phone call or email) can be a hero by becoming a whistleblower and exposing things that your company or Urban Shield or its other sponsors don't want the public to know
• Are you (the person answering the phone call or email) aware of the community opposition to Urban Shield and the concerns about out of control police?
• Please pass along this communication to your bosses
• Your company's name is being circulated in the activist community as aiding and abetting injustice
• We don't need government tanks and military vehicles on our streets
• All this police militarization is funded with taxpayer money that is stolen from the people, reducing their ability to pay for food, housing, health care, education, etc.
• Can I get a response or statement from your company on whether it intends to continue participating in Urban Shield?
