A Nation of Assimilated Immigrants

Richard,

Why is this column being published as "the Libertarian perspective?" Thomas Sipos does not seem to be saying anything anti-libertarian, and he makes a good point about the potentially divisive nature of diversity -- but his article has little to do with the LP's position. Our platform does not say open borders should be contingent on people learning to speak English or any other type of assimilation. If I move to another country and do not "assimilate," am I thereby initiating force against the people already living there, or violating their rights? No. It may or may not be a wise choice, or "the right thing to do," but it is not initiating force. *That* is the libertarian perspective.

Certainly there are other valid things to be said about the topic of migration, but the libertarian perspective is about limiting aggression, especially state aggression, *not* about touting the merits of assimilation or otherwise promoting the interests of America as a nation (as opposed to the interests of individuals who happen to live in the United States). Our official communications with the media should reflect the libertarian perspective, not a nationalist perspective, especially when they are self-identified as "THE Libertarian Perspective" [emphasis added].

Yours in liberty,
