How could you! We need all Libertarians to vote for Bob Barr so we can get Obama in office! What do you think you are doing?
If not mistaken, that's what Mr. Nolan said he's going to do and is
asking us to do....vote for Mr. Barr.
Yes, indeed, Mr. Nolan does suggest we vote for Bob Barr, as he
himself will. The other side of his argument is one I, and other
Libertarians, are wrestling with: by voting for Bob Bar, we are not
only helping Obama get into office and bringing upon our heads without
much protest more socialist plagues, but also (1) sending a message to
our party activists and to the public in general that we are all OK
with choosing a questionable libertarian for our standard bearer, and
(2) failing to fully support the real libertarian movement Ron Paul is
developing. Regarding the latter, if indeed there is a way, as
long-term Libertarian activist Gail Lightfoot is researching, to write
in for Ron Paul, I will be joining Gail an her group in doing so. As
an aside, I did not find any indication that we need votes for Barr to
keep the LP on the California ballot; if one of you out there more
knowledgeable than I know that I am mistaken in this regard, please
advise me.
Regards,
Marcy
Votes for Bob Barr have no impact on the LPC's ballot status. We maintain
our ballot status in California by obtaining at least 2% of the vote for any
one of the statewide offices (Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State,
Treasurer, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Insurance Commissioner,
etc.) in elections held two years prior to Presidential elections. This
has not been a challenge in the past for the LP, but the Peace and Freedom
Party and the Reform Party both lost their ballot status by failing to meet
this threshold. The other way to keep ballot status would be to increase
the number of registered Libertarian voters in California to a much higher
level than we have ever managed, so the 2% rule is what keeps us safe.

A (theoretically) visible way of protesting Barr is to vote for, say,
Obama and Root, the protest being visible in the difference between
Barr's and Root's vote totals.
You’re not voting for candidates, you’re voting for electors. There are
55 electors pledged to Barr and Root, and 55 pledged to Obama and Biden.
As Gail is trying to do for Paul (and???), you would have to first find
55 electors to stand for Obama and Root, then vote for them. Otherwise,
I am pretty sure your votes would be counted toward Obama’s electors.

Thanks; glad someone knows what's going on.
I recommend anyone voting for Ron Paul also consider voting for Mary Ruwart for VP.
Best, Michael
For those interested in the process of write-in votes for this
presidential election. I just received an e-mail from Gail Lightfoot
indicating that she has information that the VP slot on the electors
form can be left blank (actually, the thought occurs to me, that
absent an official VP, it should be left blank). Chris is right, you
need to be an official elector. As I indicated at the last LPSF
meeting, you accomplish that by completing a write in form, signing it
before an official empowered to administer oaths of office (such as
folks in our local Elections Department), and mailing it to the
Secretary of State by 10/21/08.
